Thursday March 12th
The Canadian Addictions Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF) applauds the courage of David Wilks Member of Parliament for Kootenay-Columbia for standing up in the House of Commons and sharing with the nation that he is in recovery from an addiction. Wearing a Silver Ribbon lapel pin the symbol of the growing recovery movement, he held up a torch to shine the light on the darkness of addiction and that not only is recovery a reality, but many like David lead successful lives and contribute selfless service to society.
For many it is difficult to fully understand the complexities of addiction and the challenge to come back from this devastating disease. CACCF has been testing and certifying addiction professionals for thirty years - but we still have a long way to go. Nowhere in this country are addiction workers like other disciplines regulated. "Why is it that my auto mechanic must be licensed but my Addiction Counsellor dealing with complex human issues does not?" Our organization is working to change that.
MP David Wilks has opened up an imperative discussion that Canadians need to have about addictions in Canada and how overall a decline in addictions side effects eases the strain on health and associated services thus reducing the budgets of Governments across the Country.
